Ext JS is now Sencha

The team behind Ext JS announced yesterday that they are combining forces with jQTouch and Raphaël Projects and changing their name to Sencha. Sencha is named after a popular Japanese green tea that follows in the same spirit after Java.

Abi Elias, the Founder and CEO of Sencha said in addition to being a popular Japanese green tea, they chose the name as it is easy to spell, pronounce and remember. The previous Name Ext JS has raised many eyebrows as users try to figure out the correct pronunciation… ekst jay es, e-x-t j-s or whatever. I think this will no longer be a problem.

jQTouch and Raphael Projects which are leading open source projects were created by David Kenada and Dmitry Baranovskiy respectively.

The roadmaps for Ext JS, Ext GWT, Designer & Direct are not expected to change therefore Ext JS 4.0 is still on its way. Sencha also assured existing customers with service contracts or licenses that they will not need to do anything as the terms in most cases will remain the same.

On the other hand, Raphaël and jQTouch will remain MIT licensed. The foundation called Sencha Labs will hold the copyright and trademarks for all the non-commercial Sencha projects. Jonathan Stark becomes the official maintainer for jQTouch.

We all can’t wait to see what the future has in store for sencha.
