Well it was a lovely morning with all the ingredients of a lovely day to follow until the guys down at marketing sent out an APB for my neck. See Honestly as a Software developer I didn’t know there were certain rules I had to follow when doing code for a website.
It all went well when I was asked to develop the back end code for a template that would display client contact details which included a working link to there website and that seemed pretty easy to me so I took one afternoon off my normal duties to whip it up. And for sure to the best of my knowledge I honestly thought it was working spot-on until I got summoned by the guys down at marketing.
Well going in with utmost confidence knowing that this is probably a new project for me, I wasn’t prepared for what was slapped right into my face. It was a letter from one of our clients explaining how as a company we have ruined them and I couldn’t understand why especially after looking at the clients contact details as displayed by in the template.
For about ten minutes (though it seemed like an hour) I received lots of misguided words fired at me… you know, the stuff you wouldn’t say in front of your momma… heck the stuff you would say in front of any one’s momma.
I was so distraught how the system missed out on validating the clients info and how it was my fault since in any case I do not do data entry. So anyway I did the honorable thing and called out to the client to get their word on the situation as I was sure it was a misunderstanding.
Now on phone with the client, I asked them (apparently it was the financial accountant on the other end of the line) to explain to me like a five year old what the problem is… and she was so eager to let me know of my mistake. She directed me to the their entry on our website and so happily said “Everything up to here is correct our details are correct and the layout is excellent; however on our contacts, the link to our website works well and does open our website. Unfortunately you are ruining our reputation because you have put up wrong information on our website and on top of that it doesn’t look professional… it is not a good impression for our clients. I just wish you hadn’t interfered with it”.
At this point I didn’t know whether to laugh, cry or turn this into a money making opportunity. In my mind I thought to myself… am not the developer of their website… honest! It’s not me. At least as I write this their web developer has started fixing up their website.

Hi, my K-meleon internet browser is displaying your web site weirdly just thought you may want to know.
Hi, this site has been tested in K-melon and seems okay to me. k-melon happens to be similar to Firefox too. Thanks though I appreciate your response. I am continually working on the website (content and code alike) to make sure it is completely bug free and to give the best user experience possible.
