If the recent release of Ubuntu’s Jaunty Jackalope is anything to go by then Karmic Koala is definitely going to live up to its name. Speaking of Names, where do these guys come up with these names? Anyway Ubuntu has announced that its next release is expected in October later this year.
Mark Shuttleworth Ubuntu’s founder has been kind enough to keep us up to speed on this new release. I must say that Jaunty has an appealing feel to it and the netbook remix is an amazing twist. A lot can be said on the performance of Jaunty http://news.cnet.com/8301-1001_3-10226746-92.html yet just as we are getting settled with it Karmic is already geared to go.
So with this announces come a few promises and expectations. Such as an even faster boot speeds surpassing those of Jaunty. Then there is the embracing of the APIs of Amazon EC2, that way a user can create their own cloud using open tools. UCSB’s Eucalyptus (Elastic Utility Computing Architecture for Linking Your Programs To Useful Systems) will also be integrated into the OS, which is actually compatible with Amazon EC2. This will allow users to create clouds in their own data centers.
I think most interestingly for me at this time is the new overhaul of the desktop. The brown seems to be on its way out and this time around, it looks like a designer is in the picture.
