Software Giant Oracle Decides to Buy Sun

This is another one of the tech stories that is managing to pull out a lot of mixed reactions from all corners. Oracle Corporation and Sun Microsystems better know for its java programming language came agreement to acquire Sun for $9.50 per share.

This deal came after IBM pulled out of talks to buy Sun. This was a twist nobody had expected including Microsoft’s Chief Executive Steve Ballmer.

The big question now arises. what lies in store mainly for Java & MySQL. Speculation is rife in the air and its anybodies guess at this time.

For one according to the press release on their website found here http://www.oracle.com/us/corporate/press/018363 Oracle has pledged commitment to and reliance on Java for their Middleware. An added commitment to Linux. And they also intend to tune Oracle to perform better (depend more on specific features in) Open Solaris – similar to MS-SQL depending on Windows specific features to perform better.

Speaking of Microsoft, I found this article http://www.cio.com.au/article/300072/microsoft_could_winner_sun-oracle_deal that believes Microsoft could eat a little bit more than their fare share of crumbs that will fall off this acquisition’s table.

Whether or not MySQL or as Vinnie Mirchandani has labeled MySQL “MyToast” is really toast leaves to be seen. Personally i use MySQL and I’d hate to see it head off to the cemetery. Here’s an article that suggests Oracle is not ready to dump MySQL http://www.forbes.com/2009/04/20/mysql-marten-mickos-technology-enterprise-tech-mysql.html

Another thought on my end is based on the article above. i would think it wise for Oracle to gain ground on the web by pushing for MySQL-Java relationship and get people to move out of MySQL-PHP.
