Just because the title feels quite like trivia doesn’t mean it is. This is one of those no brainer topics that I felt I rather sweep under the carpet as I am kinda fed up of having discussion turn into heated debates and finally into a fist fight. Okay, am kidding on the last one there.
Seriously. I thought I’d mention something on domain name extensions as I came to realize that a lot of people totally get it all wrong in terms of where lets say, a particular website with a particular domain name extension is hosted.
Let take this site for instance www.sobbayi.com now lets focus on the .com part of it. A couple of weeks ago I sat back and watched an acquaintance create a storm on how a certain government website is hosted in Kenya simply because its domain extension ended in .co.ke. Mm so a bunch of geeks laid it bare on her and rudely explained that this website apparently is hosted in America. We I have never seen anyone so determined to hold their ground. Kinda reminds me of those wildlife documentaries where you have the cornered prey mom having to defend her little ones down to the last hairs on her tail.
So anyway it was quite funny actually how the defence held her own and insisted that .com websites are all hosted in America. Well, logically speaking .com is an American TLD. Well as any true geek would do. They went on-line and downloaded and logged all sorts of evidence to prove that the website was actually hosted in America and it was quite the exhibition. I even got to learn about a host of websites out there that could neatly map such locations on where websites are put up.
To cut the long story short. She was finally brought down to her knees. I hoped she was saying a little prayer but, No! She had to submit to her relentless ruthless predators. Baptism of fire. I thank the good Lord that these guys were not my teachers.
To cut the long story short. The Internet is a web so to speak of several computers interlinked with each other. The idea of a Domain Name is simply a humanly sane way of making these computers accessibly. These Domain Names map to IP addresses ( I assume you all know what an IP address is because I am not going through explaining what it is) and it doesn’t matter where the IP address is located as long as it is on the Internet. With that said theoretically any domain name can map or point to any IP address on the Internet.
So for all those that truly didn’t know that, you have no excuse now.
