A Safari to the Font Factory

OK, I know enough has been said about Apple’s New Version of the Popular Safari Web Browser for windows. A lot of the stuff is Nasty and yeah a lot of it too is the good stuff every C.E.O wants to hear about their product. After all who wouldn’t want a bit of free [positive] publicity here and there.

Ok tonight am not going to talk about the nice things about Safari for reasons that will be revealed shortly.

As is the buzz with all these new gizmos, movies, gadgets, books etc. We are all eager to be part of whatever has stepped up as new on the market. So definitely, yeah. I did log on to Apple.com and followed the links to download the Web Browser. Well the usual experience of course. No hitches there.

Finally after a moment I had the installer right there on my laptop.

Well before any of you blame my laptop as being the cause for what am about to bring into the light, allow me to take a bit of your screen’s valuable real estate. The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite P105-S6004. Its packed with a GB of RAM, 100GB (5400RPM) Hard Drive, 17” (WXGA) TruBrite display, Windows Media Center, 128MB Graphic Accelerator.

Ok, I think you get the picture. It may not be the biggest and baddest monster out there, but certainly with those specs something has definitely got to work.

Now, back to Safari. At this point in time I was also excited let alone just eager to try out this new thing. So click, click I was on my way with the installation. After answering to a few questions and instructions I was ready to launch the application.

What happened right after that was shocking to me. There was nothing at all to look at. Well not exactly at least the sleek titanium interface showed up. The pretty little icons were all in place. There was a slight problem though. Ok I kind of exaggerated that fact but in the reverse. There was a huge problem. This one I got to give it to them I have never encountered this one in all my fourteen years experience with computers.

It was all about the FONTS. For those of you that don’t know what fonts are… they are the characters, the letters, and the stuff that makes the interface or anything for that matter on your computer readable.

The whole program had not a single font appearing on screen. It was so shocking that I had to take a peek on the Net and see what others have experienced concerning this phenomenon.

I did find articles on Safari. Nothing special there. I did find articles on Safaris good points. Nothing special there either. Now I did find articles on the Font rendering characteristics of Safari but none quite like my experience.

I am so disappointed in that I can’t even prove the other critics right or wrong. It’s a matter of just going by their word. Basically they talk about Apple’s Font rendering algorithms output being less appealing then Microsoft’s clear type font rendering, which I agree is easier on the eye when on screen reading.

Lets make this more exciting, I have proof right here, the version I download was 3.0.1 (522.12.2). So if anyone out there has this version and it works let me know. That way I can redirect my frustrations in another direction. Probably blame Microsoft or Toshiba. Heck, maybe just blame the whole lot.

Otherwise, for now, I am sticking to my guns and directing all the negativity towards Apple. They may have blundered in one way or another in the past. I have also done so, quite a lot I might add but this one just takes the cake. This is the guru of all gurus of interface blunders.

Anyway on the lighter side at least I can say the graphics where rendered real lovely, didn’t care much bout the speed. It loaded pretty ok to me (Though not as fast as Internet Explorer 7). It connected to the Internet just fine without setting up a thing.

They say it imports the favorites from Internet Explorer and calls them bookmarks. I can’t say I am aware of this, but who knows.

I do hope by now that Apple’s sorts out that problem (They probably have). Anyway all I can say is that with the little I was forced to work with I must say I loved the interface. Sleek it is. It carries the Apple’s trademark of have unique designs. Great Job they’ve done there.

Now with a parting word, please, fix the Font Problem!
