I have finally found myself staring at my computer screen with absolutely no zeal for writing the least bit of code today. With that in mind I decided to do a few updates onto my Windows Mobile Phone and I found myself being compelled to write about getting that secluded laptop online using your Windows Mobile Phone, data cable and laptop, computer or whatever.
I really have a dying need to write this because when I initially tried to get it done it caused me a humongous headache. I now feel obliged to share the secrets (I mean that in the literal sense) of how I managed to get it online.
You’d be surprised how simple it is yet there is no shred of evidence out there that gives instructions on setting up the feature. Surprisingly all I could get was how to get connected through blue tooth.
Ok lets get started. These instructions are based on the Eten G500 hand held device running on Windows Mobile 5 and a PC running Windows XP. I am a hundred percent sure that Windows 2000 or Windows Vista will work just fine.
The first thing you need to do is disconnect your Windows Mobile Phone from your PC. If it was not already connected then you need not respond to this instruction.
The reason why it must be disconnected is because ActiveSync will be activated and that is not what we want at this point in time.
Anyway, while your PDA is disconnected, Tap on the menu button, and then Tap on . On your display, look for the “Modem Link” icon and again, Tap on it.
At this point make sure under the connection drop-down combo, “USB” is selected. Assuming of course your data cable is connected through the USB port. “Baud Rate” at this point should be grayed out. This again depends on whether you use the USB connection or the Serial Connect. Finally the access point name should also appear at the bottom which can be selected from a Combo depending on whether or not it was already set up.
Now if you have your access point name available, select the preferred one (if more than one) and Tap the Button at the bottom right of the screen. If all is well then the Status at the top of the screen should read “Active”. Close the window and exit the “Program” Menu.
Ok if you had never set up a connection. This is for you. Contact your Mobile Service Provider and follow the instruction they give out. Basically what you need from them is the GPRS access point name and or username, password, domain, IP address, DNS settings etc. most Mobile Service Providers allow you to use the default settings on the hand set, but again it depends on who. These settings can be found under Start -> Settings -> Connections Tab -> Connections Icon
Well back to where we were. At this point you are ready to connect your Windows Mobile Phone to the PC. The Operating System will state that it has found new hardware. This is normal. You will note that at this time ActiveSync is not activating. This is the desired behavior we want.
