This is a project, which was meant to see the mailing list manager used on SI website made available for download and integration into your own websites. This however was clearly not going to be possible for various reasons.
For one, if we were to have a situation where you were to limit the number of subscribers then it would beat the overall purpose because we wanted an application that could manage large amounts of email.
So basically one of the major reasons why we discontinued this project is as follows. Sending batch emails is a time consuming process. Assuming you launch it from a web page, most servers would actually time out before actually sending all the emails.
The other option would be to use a CGI script and have it run by a Cron-job. Well I don’t know because we are now talking about bandwidth, processor resources etc. I have looked at a number of web hosts’ terms of use and many put a limitation on sending bulk emails.
Based on the above short comings, we brainstormed for a couple of days or more as to whether we can find a work around but…
So another solution was to severely strip down the tool to just use it as an email gatherer and sorter (Noticed how I have avoided the word ‘Harvester’) then after that probably import them into your email broadcast software. We didn’t go with this solution, as earlier stated, our aim was to make it possible to send bulk emails.
We are going to have another look into this one to decide whether to revive the project and maybe have a Windows based solution to handle the send and receive while the web based tool will be used as a Harvester… Ok sue me for finally using that word.
Anyway like we said, we will probably pull this one out of the archives and give it another look but at a later date.
