Thinking like Chess – Part 1.

I have been a long time fun of chess. I guess its because it is a game that requires a bit of forethought in the least. I remember back in the day when I used to play chess with the other boys down the block. (Sigh) Boy, those were great days.

Okay back to the article. After observing a few things over the past few days, I have found that it is rather unfortunate how guys especially here in Kenya never give forethought to decisions they make in life.

It was just the other day I was following a situation, which involved a young couple. The story goes that the wife entered a competition and ended up winning the grand prize, which was a Mercedes Benz worth about 6,000,000 KShs.

The problem started when after winning this cash monster, the wife, influenced by her relatives decided to leave the guy and go back to school or something like that.

This was an amazing problem that was likely to happen to anybody. Well am not going to use this as a forum to discuss whether the girl was justified in her choice to move out or stick around. However. Just to mention. Was it not the Apostle Paul who said in the book of Corinthians? That a husband should love his wife and the wife should submit to the husband. Marriage is a sacred institution and must be treated so.

Anyway the couple is back together as I now understand. So I guess almost all is well. So anyway as I said earlier they were not the point. This article is more focused on the organizer types.

Looking back into the situation we just encountered, A little bit of forethought could have given a more graceful meaning to the competition that they had tried to run. Thinking like chess in this situation is great practical way of sorting out this situation.

Lets have a look at it. Okay here we have a bunch of high rollers with money to spend. After splitting their head for a couple of week in their lavish boardrooms, they come up with this grand idea. “Let us run a competition”.

That’s one issue sorted out. Lets look at issue number two. Okay another couple of weeks in the boardroom. A lot of spilled coffee. Snack crumbs all over the place. Finally a long list of prizes is compiled. Grand prize is a luxury car. Okay good. Seems straightforward so far.

Piece of cake, everything settled now lets promote this thing. Stop there. There is some crucial stuff that has not been dealt with. At this point all my fellow geeks out there reading this article will agree with me on the following…

Is this a full proof idea? Okay I agree no idea is full proof. So.

Next question. Have we covered all areas?

The question I am actually pushing here is this.

What if something goes wrong after the prizes have been handed out.

Who takes the responsibility now? Is it left solely in the hands of the winners or should the organizers bare the weight?

I think, and I use that word liberally. Well I think the organizers should take full responsibility. Yeah they need to. Lets look at this case scenario. We are running a competition with a KShs. 10,000,000 first prize kitty.
